Bangladesh to Establish Blue Economy and Marine Sciences University in Cox`s Bazar
Bangladesh is moving to establish a specialised public university focused on the blue economy in Cox’s Bazar, following a directive from Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to the Education Ministry.
The proposed institution, to be named the **University of Blue Economy Sciences and Technology (UBEST)**, would focus on higher education, research, practical training and skilled workforce development in marine and coastal sectors.
To accelerate the launch, the proposal calls for using the existing facilities of the **Bangladesh Oceanographic Research Institute (BORI)** in Cox’s Bazar, including its laboratories, research facilities, scientific personnel and training infrastructure.
Initial academic and research activities could cover oceanography, fisheries and aquaculture, marine environment, coastal resource management, blue economy, marine data, tourism and hospitality.
The initiative is intended to make use of existing national research infrastructure while developing specialised human resources for Bangladesh’s growing marine and blue economy sectors. The proposed university will require further administrative and institutional steps before it becomes fully operational.
